“Feed the poor and unfortunate.”

“He that feeds the hungry feeds God also.”

Those sage words are just as pregnant and remarkably incisive today, as they were when ancient holy men wrote them in the first half of the first millennium A.D. Hunger today in New York City is rampant. Thousands go hungry every night, some do so day after day. For the past 29 years, Rex Duval has helped feed the hungry at the Bowery Mission.  He believes hunger in Manhattan can be alleviated in a modest, but meaningful way by those who utilize THE EXTRA PLATE® program.

 

            CNN TV recently honored NYC heroes, including, Jorge Munoz, a bus driver who keeps 5 refrigerators in his small apartment, cooks rice, beans and chicken every day and feeds 150 to 200 hungry people nightly. He alone has fed 70,000 needy people in this fashion. As I watched the hero bus driver receive accolades for his generous works on behalf of the hungry I asked myself: who wouldn’t want to help this man and others like him who feed Manhattan’s hungry.

 

            Jorge Munoz was the inspiration for THE EXTRA PLATE®. Now anyone who sponsors a party catered by Rex Duval can also help feed the poor and needy.

 

            How it works: Anyone considering a catered event can now participate in helping to curb hunger in NY.  If Rex Duval Caterers handles the event, then concurrently a provider of food for the hungry of New York City is given the wherewithal to feed an equal number of people courtesy of THE EXTRA PLATE®. It is a pure Mitzvah for the client who is not identified unless he or she wishes to become known for this charitable largess.  However, a letter of thanks from the food provider will be sent to the donor. The party giver is offered several options; the bus driver—New York's own Jorge Munoz—the Bowery Mission, a selected Islamic, Catholic, or Protestant feeding program, or another of their choice.  Every time a party is given, an equal number of needy people are fed.
